BES

My favorite Ancient Egyptian god is Bes. Bes' main job was to SCARE evil away. So you will find Bes amulets woven into mummies to make sure the afterlife was secure. Pregnant mothers would call on Bes to make sure their birth was without evil. Any where evil could mess things up you would find Bes.

But Bes is unique. Just look at the way he is depicted in Ancient Egypt. He is one of the only gods depicted face forward (Hathor is also often face forward). His scary appearance and burning eyes are meant to scare even YOU as you look at him. He is also a dwarf god. Dwarfs were thought to be special in Ancient Egypt. There was even a dwarf Pharaoh in the Old Kingdom (Pepi, 6th Dynasty).

Come and see Bes, and the other gods of Ancient Egypt!

Beni Hassan

Tucked away in the less touristy places of Egypt are the tombs of Beni Hassan. These are not the tombs of kings and queens that you find in most tour places, these are the tombs of nobles. Smaller but with many of the tomb paintings familiar in the 18th-19th Dynasties.

There are a LOT of steps to get up to the tombs ... BUT it is well worth it when you are there!

The tomb paintings are of everyday activities done by the nobles, which gives you glimpses of the lives of normal Ancient Egyptians

The painting above is one of the most famous ones of Semites (Hebrews?) coming to trade with the nobles of Beni Hassan.

You really have to see this! You really have to Tour Egypt With Me!

Picture Possibilities

I like to take creative and fun pictures while I am in Egypt. My wife is the serious photographer and I let her take all the GREAT PICTURES that are available in Egypt. I mean, there is another great picture around every corner and almost everywhere you look.

Here is one of the fun ones I had taken of me. I try to find one of these when I lead the tours in Egypt for you to take too.

Abydos

There are MANY magical places in Egypt. But here in one of the "chapels" at Abydos you find the lighting streaming in from the ceiling. Ancient lighting makes for some pretty cool pictures today.

Time to Tour Egypt With Me! to see these places

NOW is the BEST time to go to Egypt. I have been to Egypt when there were so many people that you had to meander single file through the crowds to get to where you wanted to be. Your guide had to wait for another guide to finish before he/she could tell us what we were looking at.

NOW is the Best time. Look at this picture. My group was the ONLY ONE HERE for the entire time!

Here is my wife and I in front of a temple ALL BY OURSELVES!
Not a single other tourist

Block Yards

Throughout Egypt there are a lot of Block Yards. This is where the archaeologists take all the interesting blocks from nearby ancient structures and lay them all out in a yard. Most of the time they don't have the money or just haven't had the time to put them back into the structure. But just as often they don't quite know where they go ...

So tourists can walk through these Yards and look at all the interesting blocks, see the hieroglyphs and touch history. The following picture is a headless sphinx in one such yard. It makes for good pictures.

My son Jamin as a sphinx ...

Aliens in Abydos?

You have to tour Egypt with me to see the helicopter, blimp, submarine, and fighter jet sculpted on a wall 4000 years ago in Abydos. We will visit Abydos in October. Do you think it was Ancient Aliens?

The MOST common theory is a coincidence where one king plastered over the sculptures of another king and wrote about his own sacrifices and gifts to the gods. Over time the plaster came off and coincidentally formed these shapes we recognize today.

But it could be aliens ...

In the Bowels of History

There is one place in Egypt that I don't really want to visit again ... actually a few of them. That is deep inside the tunnels of the Great Pyramids of Giza. I've done it, in all three, at various times so I can say that I actually did it but ... it is a difficult journey for a large man over 6 foot tall.

BUT YOU have to do it at least once in your life. Along with a possible sense of claustrophobia you will definitely get a sense of history, a sense of walking where the ancient Egyptians walked and worked. Unlike the tunnels to the tombs in the Valley of the Kings, the tunnels into the Pyramids are not painted or adorned in any way, they just take you into the bowels of history where you will end up at the burial chamber of a 5000+ year old king!

You have to do it!

One who went on the tour with me, a good friend Harlan Vande Griend seeming to enjoy the journey into the bowels of the Pyramid

If I had my choice of places to be in Egypt right now it would be the "Worker Village" of Deir el Medina. Here is the village where the workers for the Valley of the Kings lived. Just over the mountain in the background of the picture is the Valley of the Kings and Queens. They built their own tombs; smaller but just as well painted and better preserved. You really need to go see this place!

Here is my friend Ahmed Nagy in the Village.
